The People's Bank of China announced on Monday to issue a set of commemorative coins for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games (SOWSG) on August 17.

The commemorative coins are comprised of 20,000 1/4 ounce gold coins and 40,000 1/2 ounce silver coins, with the face value of 100 yuan and five yuan each. They are all regarded as legal tender in China.

The coins are produced by Shanghai Mint and will be distributed by China Gold Coin Inc.

The 2007 SOWSG, aiming at empowering those intellectually disabled to become physically fit, will kick off on October 2, 2007 in Shanghai, with more than 10,000 athletes and coaches from 170 countries and regions participating.
