Aid to leukemia patients

China Daily | Updated: 2009-02-21 08:03

A chance meeting with Premier Wen Jiabao has given two-year-old leukemia patient Li Rui a much-needed treatment.

But behind the dramatic change of fate for the boy and his parents, who had decided to give up his treatment due to the high costs involved, is the story of 10 percent of the country's nearly 4 million leukemia patients, who also have difficulties in paying for their treatment.

To date, the money donated for Li Rui's treatment amounts to more than 200,000 yuan ($29,260), including a donation of 10,000 yuan from Premier Wen. This moving story should shift the entire society's attention to the thousands of others who are not as lucky as Li.
