A musical based on the classic 1942 movie "Casablanca" is to be shown
from April 8 to 12 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Inspired by the original black-and-white film, the set for the
performance has been modeled after the film's infamous "Rick's Café
Américain" by using special lighting and effects.
Explaining why he adapted this classical film for the stage, producer
John Clifford said he loves the movie and believes that such a wonderful
story would be excellent in any form.
But the ambitious project is, of course, costly.
Although Warner Brothers is footing the
bill
, doubts have been voiced about the play's
steep budget; however, John Clifford managed to persuade the media giant
with promises that the production would improve on the classical film.
The show mixes various forms of the performing
arts including jazz, ballet and tap
dancing
side by side.
The producer also says the musical keeps all the film's original music
and but also adds some tailor-made pieces to the onstage performance.
But can Chinese people understand this American musical? John Clifford
says he thinks the production will be a big hit because the emotions of
the lead roles are clearly expressed in their movements and further
accentuated with music.
Beijing is the show's first stop on its world tour.
