Three National Basketball Association players, including Boston Celtics star Gary Payton, are due to appear in a Canadian court on Monday to face assault charges stemming from an incident outside a Toronto strip club, according to court documents obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.

In April 2003, Payton, along with then teammates Sam Cassell and Jason Caffey, were charged after an altercation with one of the downtown club's dancers, her husband and the club's security guard.

The three men, who played for the Milwaukee Bucks at the time of the incident, were in town for a game against the Toronto Raptors.

Payton, who is represented by high-profile lawyer Brian Greenspan, is charged with one count of aggravated assault causing bodily harm, and two counts of simple assault.

Cassell, who now plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves, is charged with two counts of simple assault, while Caffey, a free agent, faces one count of simple assault.

Court proceedings are scheduled for July 4, 6, 7 and 8 in an Ontario Provincial Criminal Court.

Payton could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted on an indictable offense, while Cassell and Caffey could face an 18-month prison term.
