Grammar: Prepositions

Question: What is the difference between between and among?

Grammar: Prepositions

Generally speaking, the simple rule is that between is between two things, and among is among three or more things. So for example:

? Between you and me, I don’t think Mary is getting a promotion.

? There are no trouble-makers among our school’s students.

However, there are some situations involving three or more things where we would use between:

? A united situation:

o We raised over five thousand dollars between the three of us.

? An opposition or competition

o There was a lot of competition between the top three students, and it was difficult to choose between them for the prize.
