Taiwan parties, groups slam false claims about UN resolution

Pro-reunification political parties and groups in Taiwan issued a statement on Thursday strongly condemning the recent false claims by some politicians from the United States and the Democratic Progressive Party authorities that the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 had nothing to do with Taiwan.

Passed at a UNGA session in 1971, UNGA Resolution 2758 made it clear that there is only one seat for China in the United Nations, precluding scenarios such as "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan".

The parties and groups said in the statement that the false claims are an attempt to undermine the one-China principle in the international arena, ignore the UN Charter and international law, deliberately misinterpret historical facts, and represent another instance of the US interfering in another country's domestic affairs.

Emphasizing that Taiwan is an integral part of China and not a separate country, the statement clarified that Resolution 2758 addressed the issue of China's representation and therefore is relevant to Taiwan, and the international community's consensus on the one-China principle remains unchanged, and the so-called "Taiwan's undetermined status" is a fabricated false proposition.

Taiwan should not be used as a pawn by the US to hinder the mainland's development, nor should the island foster hostility and prevent people-to-people exchanges between both sides, the parties said.

Separately, Chen Binhua, a spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, on Saturday slammed Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te who called for Taiwan people for so-called self-salvation against "the threat of communism swallowing Taiwan" during a recent symposium.

Chen said Lai's remarks fully exposed his sinister intention for "Taiwan independence" and elevating confrontation across the Taiwan Strait.

It has been a common practice of Lai and the DPP to impose "Taiwan independence" stance of a few people on the entirety of Taiwan people under the name of "democracy and freedom", Chen said.

He called on Taiwan compatriots to fully realize that "Taiwan independence" is a threat to peace in the Strait and their own safety.
