Ideology and faith are like calcium for communists' minds. We must strengthen ideological and political construction, and establish a correct world view, view of life and value set, which can act as a master switch.

Huang, known for his expertise in deep earth exploration technology, studied and worked in the United Kingdom for 18 years before returning to China in 2009. In the ensuing years, he helped China soar in a number of technical fields, transforming the nation into one of the world's leaders in deep earth exploration.
黃大年專攻地球深部探測技術(shù)，曾經(jīng)在英國學(xué)習(xí)和工作了18年，于2009年回國。在之后的幾年間，他幫助中國在多個(gè)技術(shù)領(lǐng)域迅猛發(fā)展，使我國轉(zhuǎn)而在地球深部探測領(lǐng)域達(dá)到國際領(lǐng)先水平。

Wasting no time, Huang holed up in his office working day and night, with only two to three hours of sleep a day, earning him the deserved title of "workaholic". Overtime working wrecked his health and he died from illness aged 58 on Jan 8.
黃大年工作起來爭分奪秒，沒日沒夜，每天只有2-3個(gè)小時(shí)的睡眠，因此也得了一個(gè)“拼命黃郎”的稱號。過度勞累摧毀了他的身體。今年1月8日，他因病逝世，年僅58歲。

China’s success hinges on the CPC. The leadership of the CPC constitutes the most essential attribute of Chinese socialism, and the greatest strength of this system. The foundation and lifeblood of the CPC and the country, and the interests and wellbeing of all Chinese people, boil down to upholding and improving the leadership of the CPC.

CPC has 89.45 million members and grassroots Party units have increased to 4.52 million, according to a communique published ahead of the 96th anniversary of CPC's founding on July 1.
中國共產(chǎn)黨建黨96周年紀(jì)念日前夕發(fā)表的公報(bào)顯示，中國共產(chǎn)黨擁有8945萬名黨員，基層黨組織已增至452萬個(gè)。

The growth rate of CPC membership has dropped while the structure of its members has improved since 2013 when the Party implemented a recruitment rule which stressed the quality of members while limiting the quantity.
中國共產(chǎn)黨自2013年實(shí)行重視質(zhì)量、限制數(shù)量的發(fā)展黨員原則以來，黨員數(shù)量增長速度有所下降，黨員結(jié)構(gòu)得到優(yōu)化。

"To do a good job of governing the country, we must first do a good job of governing the CPC, and that means governing it strictly. If we cannot manage the Party effectively, or govern it with the necessary stringency, then the problems within the Party that the public feel most strongly about will go unsolved, and our Party will eventually lose the right to govern, being unavoidably eliminated by history. Effective governance hinges on strict governance. We need to integrate the requirement of strict governance throughout all processes in the running of the Party, carrying out a genuine, brave, and constant effort to govern the Party."

Thorough cleanup of undesirable work style

教育實(shí)踐活動(dòng)要著眼于自我凈化、自我完善、自我革新、自我提高，以“照鏡子、正衣冠、洗洗澡、治治病”為總要求。
The "mass line" campaign should focus on self-purification, self-perfection, self-renewal and self-progression of Party officials, following the general guideline of "look into the mirror, straighten the attire, take a bath and seek remedies."

群眾路線（mass line）就是一切為了群眾，一切依靠群眾，從群眾中來，到群眾中去（doing everything for the masses, relying on them in every task, carrying out the principle of “from the masses, to the masses”）。

習(xí)近平在2013年6月黨的群眾路線教育實(shí)踐活動(dòng)工作會(huì)議上指出，目前黨內(nèi)脫離群眾現(xiàn)象集中表現(xiàn)在形式主義（formalism）、官僚主義（bureaucratism）、享樂主義（hedonism）和奢靡之風(fēng)（extravagance）這“四風(fēng)”上。

Based on arrangements made at the 18th CPC National Congress in November 2012, the campaign lasted 16 months starting from June 2013.
根據(jù)2012年11月中國共產(chǎn)黨第十八次全國代表大會(huì)的部署，為期16個(gè)月的黨的群眾路線教育實(shí)踐活動(dòng)于2013年6月啟動(dòng)。

Through the campaign, official meetings were reduced by 586,000, almost 25 percent fewer than in the period before the campaign began. Over 160,000 phantom staff members were removed from the government payroll and almost 115,000 vehicles taken out of illicit private use and returned to exclusive regular government affairs. Construction of 2,580 unnecessary official buildings was stopped.

2016年10月召開的中國共產(chǎn)黨第十八屆中央委員會(huì)第六次全體會(huì)議聚焦全面從嚴(yán)治黨（comprehensively strengthen Party discipline）的重大主題，審議通過了兩個(gè)重要文件：《關(guān)于新形勢下黨內(nèi)政治生活的若干準(zhǔn)則》（The Norms Regarding Intra-Party Political Life In New Situation）和《中國共產(chǎn)黨黨內(nèi)監(jiān)督條例》（Regulations Regarding Intra-Party Supervision）。

The norms, in 12 parts, stress consolidating ideals and beliefs, keeping to the Party's basic line, safeguarding the authority of the CPC Central Committee, and maintaining close ties with the people.
準(zhǔn)則共有12個(gè)部分，強(qiáng)調(diào)堅(jiān)定理想信念、堅(jiān)持黨的基本路線、堅(jiān)決維護(hù)黨中央權(quán)威、保持黨同人民群眾的血肉聯(lián)系。

The regulation, which consists of eight chapters and 47 articles, aims to uphold the CPC leadership, strengthen Party building, promote the comprehensive and strict governance of the Party and maintain the Party's purity.
條例共有8章47條，旨在堅(jiān)持黨的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)、加強(qiáng)黨的建設(shè)、推進(jìn)全面從嚴(yán)治黨，維護(hù)黨純潔性。

習(xí)近平曾經(jīng)在中國共產(chǎn)黨第十八屆中央紀(jì)律檢查委員會(huì)第二次全體會(huì)議上表示：

要堅(jiān)持“老虎”、“蒼蠅”一起打，既堅(jiān)決查處領(lǐng)導(dǎo)干部違紀(jì)違法案件，又切實(shí)解決發(fā)生在群眾身邊的不正之風(fēng)和腐敗問題。
We must uphold the fighting of tigers and flies at the same time, resolutely investigating law-breaking cases of leading officials and also earnestly resolving the unhealthy tendencies and corruption problems which happen all around people.

習(xí)近平在十八屆中央紀(jì)委二次全會(huì)上表示，工作作風(fēng)(work style)上的問題絕對不是小事，如果不堅(jiān)決糾正不良風(fēng)氣，任其發(fā)展下去，就會(huì)像一座無形的墻把我們黨和人民群眾隔開(putting up an invisible wall between our Party and the people)，我們黨就會(huì)失去根基、失去血脈、失去力量(lose our roots, our lifeblood and our strength)。我們要堅(jiān)定決心，有腐必反(fight every corrupt phenomenon)、有貪必肅(punish every corrupt official)，不斷鏟除腐敗現(xiàn)象滋生蔓延的土壤(constantly eradicate the soil which breeds corruption)，以實(shí)際成效取信于民。

Nearly 1.2 million people have been punished for violating CPC and government rules since November 2012. In total, 240 centrally administered officials have been investigated, with 223 receiving punishments, Wu Yuliang, deputy head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, said at a news conference on Jan 9, 2017.
自2012年11月以來，已有近120萬人因?yàn)檫`反黨紀(jì)政紀(jì)受到處分。中紀(jì)委副書記吳玉良在今年1月9日的新聞發(fā)布會(huì)上表示，中央紀(jì)委共立案審查中管干部240人，給予紀(jì)律處分223人。

By May 31, 2017, 3,051 fugitives, including 41 listed in an Interpol red notice, have been extradited or returned from more than 90 countries and regions, with assets worth about 9.1 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) recovered, according to the website of the CCDI.
